Green Tea - Drink for Your Health

Posted On 2010-08-23 , 6:13 AM

One ancient Chinese proverb states, "Better to be deprived of food for three days, than tea for one."

Green tea is said to have many health benefits. Apparently, the Chinese have been aware of the medicinal benefits for centuries. They have used green tea to treat many conditions, from depression to headaches. Recent research is confirming the health benefits of drinking green tea.

Green tea is so special because of the fact that it is so rich in anti-oxidants. This is true of green tea as opposed to other Chinese teas because of the processing. The leaves of the green tea are steamed and not fermented. This prevents the compound which is rich in anti-oxidants from being oxidized.

Some of the health benefits of green tea include:
  • Cholesterol - It lowers cholesterol levels. It may, therefore, reduce the risk of heart attacks.
  • Bowel Disease - Inflammation due to Chrohn's disease and colitis may be reduced by drinking green tea.
  • Diabetes - Green tea has been used to control the blood sugar for people with diabetes.
  • Liver Disease - Green tea may inhibit the development of liver disorders. It may also protect the liver against toxins ingested through substances such as alcohol.
  • Weight Loss - Dieters have used green tea to boost metabolism and burn fat.
  • Cancer - Research is showing, although not everyone agrees, that green tea may protect against cancer (bladder, breast, ovarian, colorectal, lung, pancreatic, skin, etc). The research shows that cancer is lower in countries where there is a large consumption of green tea.
  • Tooth decay - Green tea can destroy the bacteria that causes dental plaque and can help prevent food poisoning.
Green tea is readily found on the market everywhere. It has also been into a supplement for those who do not like the taste of green tea. Skin creams and deodorants using green tea have been developed. It is included in the very healthy drink of greens. So enjoy your green tea and stay healthy!

Your Health, Your Eyes

Posted On 2010-07-14 , 5:58 AM

One important area of your health is your eyes. Eyes are one of our most important organs in our body. Have you ever noticed how expressive eyes can be? Even people who have difficulty speaking can express themselves with their eyes. Taking good care of this special organ is vital! There are ways to do this and to prevent eye disease.

1. Nutrition is important. Small changes can make a big difference to keeping your eyes in good shape. Carrots do help. Foods rich in beta-carotene improve night vision and general vision health. Vitamin filled foods keep the eyes healthier and brighter looking. Anti-inflammatory foods are a good addition. Red meat is to be avoided. Foods rich in omega 3 fatty acids are healthy for the eyes. Berries can be helpful, too. Foods that prevent inflammation and foods with antioxidants have been known to help prevent eye diseases such as cataracts and macular degeneration.

2. Keep your eyes refreshed and clean. Wash with cold and clear running water to keep them refreshed.

3. Eyes need to be protected from the sun. Sun exposure can be linked to problems such as cataracts and macular degeneration. Those sunglasses with 100% UV protection are worth the investment.

4. Avoid smoking, since smoking increases the chances of developing vision problems and eye diseases. Smoking damages blood vessels and can deprive your eye tissues of oxygen.

5. If you have itchy eyes, don't rub your eyes! Use curd to massage your scalp.

6. Treat the bags under your eyes. Remove them by placing slices of cucumber for about 30 to 60 minutes, with eyes closed.

7. Always have clean hands when touching your eyes and the area around them. Washing hands is important.

8. Many people spend a lot of time in front of the television or computer. This can put stress on the eyes. Refresh your eyes by placing cool cotton pads on them for about 10 minutes. Make the screen is at a proper distance from you and positioned slightly below the sight line.

9. Wash your face before going to bed. Getting rid of makeup and dirt in the area of the eye could avoid bad reactions to the eyes.

10. Go for a thorough eye exam. This is an essential step to protect the eyes, especially for someone with a family history of problems with the eyes.

11. Exercise your eyes. This can improve and strength vision, maybe even to the point where regular glasses are unnecessary. The Bates eye exercise method is safe and effective. Pinhole eye glasses help with this, too. These will automatically provide exercise for your eyes while you wear them.

12. Take supplements. There are a variety of natural herbs and supplements that can be beneficial. Ginkgo biloba, lutein, bilberry, eyebright, goldenseal extract, hawthorn and witch hazel extract are just a few possibilities.

It is easier to take care of your eyes than to correct problems later. Your vision is so important. Do want you can to jazz up the health of your eyes!

The Miraculous Apple Cider Vinegar

Posted On 2010-07-02 , 1:52 PM

Apples!  Apple pie, apple crisp, apple butter...  These are all images many of us have when someone mentions apples.
Remember the old saying, "An apple a day keeps the doctor away"? There is some truth to that saying.

Apples are a good source of potassium. Potassium has been known as the master mineral. It helps to flush the toxins out of the body. Potassium is needed to build and keep youthful tissues. It fights bacteria and viruses.

Many people are lacking in potassium. Signs of potassium deficiency include:
  • pain or dizziness when straightening up after leaning over
  • pains in muscles and bones, especially the lower back
  • dull morning headaches
  • dull, faded looking hair; unmanageable hair
  • itchy scalp, dandruff and premature thinning of hair
  • sore, itchy eyes
  • eyes won't focus and tire easily
  • lack of mental alertness
  • tire easily, both mentally and physically
  • become irritable and impatient
  • nervous and depressing feelings
  • extremities, such as hands and feet get chilled and cold even when it is warm
A very potent source of potassium, even better than an apple itself, is apple cider vinegar. It was used to treat patients as early as 400 BC by Hippocrates for the powerful healing and cleansing properties. Apple cider vinegar is a naturally occurring antiseptic and antibiotic.

The benefits of this miracle health food are numerous. Among other things, apple cider vinegar:
  • relieves chronic fatigue and stiffness. It renews vitality. Mix 1 heaping teaspoon of honey, 2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar and 1 cup of water. Drink slowly.
  • helps control weight. This, of course is in conjunction with proper diet and exercise. Drink a mixture of 1/2 teaspoon of honey, 1 teaspoon of apple cider vinegar and 1 cup of distilled water 3 times daily.
  • relieves headaches. Boil 2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar and 1 cup of water. Remove from heat. Put your head over the fumes with your head covered with a towel. Takes 10 deep breaths of the mixture. Relief should come within 40 minutes.
  • helps combat tickling and sore throats. Gargle with a mixture of 1 tablespoon of apple cider vinegar in 1/2 cup of water (not hot). Gargle with 3 mouthfuls per hour (spit out).
  • keeps skin looking healthy and youthful. Put 1/2 cup of apple cider vinegar in a small basin of water. Use this mixture to massage your body thoroughly. (Go gentle on your face.) You can also use apple cider vinegar for a facial. Wash your face with hot water (no soap). Apply a wrung-out, hot water soaked towel to the skin for 3 minutes. Remove. Apply a thin towel which has been soaked in warm water (containing 2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar per cup of water) and cover this with a wrung-out, very hot water soaked towel. Lie down and relax for about 5 to 10 minutes with your feet elevated.
  • fights kidney and bladder problems
  • improves digestion
  • fights arthritis
There are so many benefits and uses, it is difficult to list them all! Use it every day - both internally and externally. Apple cider vinegar is an entirely natural product. It is proving to be a great aid for health and long life!

Honey - How Wonderful!

Posted On 2010-06-01 , 6:08 AM

MMM - honey!  Almost everyone loves honey.

I have fond memories of spending summer vacation with my cousin whose father was a bee keeper.  The taste of the fresh honey just harvested was wonderful!  I loved watching the extracting and being allowed to suck honey out of the wax chunks.  The honey sold in stores and markets can never compare!  Of course, that could be just the perception of the child I was them.

Did you know that when honey becomes solid, you can liquify it again?  You can use the micowave for this.  Or you can put the container of honey in a pot of water on the stove (don;t cover the container entirely with water) and liquify it more slowly.

We all know honey is a sweetener.  It is sweeter than sugar.  But honey is not just a sweetener, it is also a food - a very healthy one!  Honey has a lot of nutritional value.  It contains natural sugars, water, vitamins, minerals, pollen and protein.

It is a source of carbohydrates.  It is a natural strength and energy booster.  The natural sugars in honey help to prevent fatigue while exercising.

Some good ideas:
  • Get energy for the day by having some toast with honey or
  • Prepare for exercising by having a spoonful of honey first.
Honey can boost the immune system.  It is an anti-oxidant.  It has been used to aid digestion.

Honey has also been used as a natural remedy in many areas:
  • helps to reduce infections
  • reduces pain and swelling
  • soothes sore throats.  Drink hot tea sweetened with honey.  Gargle with a mixture of warm water, honey, lemon juice and a pinch of salt.  Some professional singers use honey before performing to sooth their throats.
  • as a sleep inducer.  Use the age-old remedy of milk and honey.  Add some honey to a glass of warm milk for a drink to help you sleep.
  • honey, together with lemon and garlic can help lower blood pressure (read the recipe in our last blog for this).
  • honey and vinegar make a healthy drink - used for many health issues.
  • honey has also been used together with cinnamon for many health benefits.  This has been used by the Orientals centuries for many ailments.
We have just scratched the surface of the many benefits of honey here.  Honey is a wonderful tasting food.  Of course, the taste and benefits of honey may vary according to what the bees feed on.  Whatever kind it is, it is worth adding to the daily diet, since the benefits of honey are many.

Health Benefits of Garlic

Posted On 2010-05-12 , 6:08 AM

Another very healthy and tasty food is garlic. Almost everyone loves their garlic bread or toast with spaghetti and meat sauce or other pasta dishes. It is widely used as a food or seasoning in making sauces, soups and pickles.

Some like as a food by itself. Cut the top of a whole garlic. Drizzle a bit of olive oil on it and add salt and pepper. Bake it until it is tender and enjoy!

Garlic has also been used for centuries for its medicinal and health benefits. The strong taste and odor of the garlic comes from its sulphur content. It is this sulphur content that provides the health benefits and it does have many health benefits!

Studies have been conducted to show that many of the health benefits attributed to garlic in the old folklore are not that far off the mark!

Among other things, garlic:
  • is a powerful antibiotic
  • improves the body's immune system
  • is good for the heart
  • may prevent heart attacks
  • is nourishment for hair
  • is used to stimulate the appetite
  • is a blood thinner
  • dissolves blood clots
  • controls cholesterol
  • reduces high blood pressure
  • revitalizes the blood and removes toxins
  • stimulates circulation
  • prevents infections
  • maintains health and strength
I have used the following recipe for a few years now, together with a few other natural herbal supplements such as garlic capsules to control my blood pressure naturally. My pressure is now normal.

Recipe for controlling blood pressure:

1 whole lemon - sliced thinly (discard only the seeds)
1 whole garlic - minced
50 ml (3 tbsp + 1 tsp) of honey
1 litre (4 cups) of water

Boil the water. Put some of it into a blender with the remainder of the ingredients. Blend until smooth. Add the rest of the water. Drink about 1/2 cup of this solution every day (either cold, warm or hot, as you like it).

Garlic can be eaten cooked, raw or its juice can be used. Because of its strong odor, many people prefer to take it in pill or capsule form. In any case, add garlic to your diet for your health!

A natural breath freshener after eating garlic is fresh parsley.
